One Pillar Pagoda, Hanoi

A mere replica stands in place of the original pagoda which was destroyed during the French War. The former was a tribute of the Emperor Ly Thai Tong as thanksgiving for the awaited male child who will be a heir to the throne. The pagoda takes on the shape of a lotus representing the lotus in the Emperor's dream from which the Goddess of Mercy gave him a boy. It may not really be architecturally enriched but is often visited by people who are praying for a son or those who would like to pay tribute to Hanoi's history.
