Mongolia is a landlocked country and does not have any ports though a ship, barges and motorboats are available for transport through inland waterways.
Since Mongolia is a landlocked country traveling by rail is one of the more convenient ways of getting around. It is also a major contributor in terms of international trade.
Though going around by bus would be a good idea to see the region, the buses in Mongolia are old and may be a candidate for breakdowns. Mini buses available for tourists would be a better choice.
Driving around by car is not advisable since much of the roads in Mongolia are unpaved. Jeeps are sometimes available for hire and are more suitable for getting around. Hiring a driver along with the jeep would be good since the locals are more familiar with the directions and the terrain. Commuting by taxi will pretty much not get you beyond the city since taxi drivers may not drive through unpaved roads.
