Malaysia Festivals

Like other Asian nations, Malaysia celebrates various festivals for the different religious practices that are found in its land. Usually such festivals has some involvement with Buddhism, Taoism, Islam, or Christianity. As most festivals are not dependent on Gregorian Calendar, it is hard to plot them all together according to the usual 12 months that is known.
- Thaiponggol - a Hindu harvest festival celebrated around the second week of January. It is an offertory act of farmers of newly harvested grain.
- Chinese New Year - A festival that seem to be in almost all country where people of Chinese origin lives. Usually falls on about the late part of January or early February.
- Hari Raya Aidilfitri - A Muslim celebration celebrated after their one month fasting done on the first day of Syawal or the tenth month of their calendar.
- Deepavali - a major Hindu festival when lamps are lit in homes proclaiming triumph of light over darkness. Several temples are venues for prayers and traditional oil baths while Hindu homes afterwards welcome friends and relatives.

- National Water Festival - a celebration of the role and importance of water source to the country. Usually celebrated with cultural and agricultural shows and traditional games.
- Gawai Dayak - a major celebration for the Dayaks of Sarawak serving as thanksgiving for the harvest and the "break" before a new planting season begins.
- Penang International Dragon Boat Festival - first race held dates back to 1956. It is presently participated by some countries of Asia-Pacific and USA, Norway, Britain and Germany.
- Nine Emperor Gods Festival - a nine days religious festival celebrated on the 9th day of the 9th month of the Chinese Calendar. It usually involves chanting of prayers at temples, eating vegetarian meals, and constant tinkling of bells.
- Christmastime - an almost month long preparation and celebration in commemoration of the birth of Jesus Christ. Highlight is usually on the 25th of December. Caroling of houses and setting up of decorations usually starts early part of the month.
